The increasing popularity of automatic transmission in cars has been acknowledged by automakers and hence there are numerous automatic models on sale under Rs. 6-7 lakh price bracket. While purists may disagree, there is no hiding the fact that cars with automatic transmissions are easier to drive than their manual counterparts. In city traffic conditions, cars with automatic transmission is a boon for drivers as the effort of driving the car in crawling jams is reduced by more than half. If you are looking towards buying an automatic transmission equipped car but are a bit short on budget, here are 10 automatic cars that can be bought without burning a hole in your pocket.

Datsun Redi-Go

Starting off the list is the Datsun Redi-Go, which is one of the most affordable cars you can buy in India, granted that you don’t g for a used one. The funky little hatchback may not be the most feature-rich hatchback but still comes with a 5-speed AMT transmission. The Redi-Go is powered by a 1.0-litre engine that generates a maximum of 67 Bhp and 91 Nm. A 799 cc engine is also available on the lower variants but the AMT is only with the 1-litre engines. The base auto variant of the Datsun Redi-Go is priced at Rs. 4.19 lakh. .

Renault Kwid

Next up is the Renault Kwid which is a hatchback designed on the lines of an SUV. Its unique crossover-ish design is one of the reasons behind its popularity, though it is quite a value package at its price point. The Kwid is available in two engine options but the AMT option is only available with its more powerful 1.0-litre engine. The three-cylinder petrol engine churns out a maximum of 67 Bhp and 91 Nm and gets a unique rotary dial knob for the transmission. However, the Kwid’s transmission does not allow you to change gears manually but that should not be a tradeoff for many.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

The Alto K10 is especially popular among the first time car buyers and with its base auto variant available for just Rs. 4.43 lakhs, it’s really hard to avoid this package.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Maruti Celerio was the first car in the affordable segment to introduce the AMT automatic transmission in India. The Celerio remains one of the favourite cars in the segment and offers a lot of space. The car is powered only by a petrol engine, after the diesel option was discontinued by the company. It gets a 1.0-litre K10 petrol engine that generates a maximum of 67 Bhp – 90 Nm. It gets a 5-speed AMT transmission.

Hyundai Santro

The car is powered by a 1.1-litre engine that churns out 68 Bhp of power along with 99 Nm of toque.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R

Maruti Suzuki launched the all-new WagonR in January this year. It has much more spacious interiors compared to the older generation model apart from having a tonne of features and a more powerful engine. The base automatic variant, however, still uses the same old 1.0-litre K10 engine that churns out a maximum of 67 Bhp power and 90 Nm torque. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed AMT transmission and the base LXi 1.0 AMT variant is priced at Rs. 5.26 lakhs.

Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago is a solid contender at its price point and is the best selling car for Tata currently. The Tiago comes powered by both petrol and diesel engine options, though the automatic transmission is available with only the petrol engine. The base variant with the AMT transmission on the Tiago is the Revotron XZA, which is priced at Rs. 5.60 lakh. The petrol engine here is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit that pumps out a maximum of 87 Bhp and 114 Nm of peak torque. It also gets the sports mode with the AMT automatic transmission.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis was intended to be a stylish tall boy hatchback for the urban buyers but it clearly missed the target. The Ignis is only available with a 1.2 litre petrol engine and the base automatic variant is the Delta AMT, priced at Rs. 5.87 lakh.

Hyundai Grand i10

The Hyundai Grand i10 is the only car on this list which has a conventional automatic gearbox and not an AMT unit (Automated Manual Transmission). The reason behind most of the affordable cars having an AMT box is simple – it is cheaper than the conventional auto boxes. Coming back to the Grand i10, it comes with a torque converter unit which is available from the Magna AT 1.2 variant. This variant is priced at Rs. 6.52 lakh making the Grand i10 the most affordable torque converter car in India. Hyundai is currently working on the next generation model of the Grand i10 which is expected to come here by next year.

Tata Tigor

Base auto variant price: Rs. 6.40 lakh (Revotron XMA)

The Tata Tigor is one of the most affordable sedans you can buy in the country. The stylish sub-4 meter segment sedan was updated last year and is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. The automatic option on the Tigor, which is an AMT unit, is only available with the petrol-powered variants. The base automatic variant is the Revotron XMA which is available for Rs. 6.40 lakh. Though the three-pot motors are not as smooth as some of its rivals, its smart exteriors and value for money tag makes it a great option.
