Yamaha has been a popular motorcycle brand in India for a long time now. From its initial days of selling the RD350 and then the RX100 to this day where it sells affordable performance bikes like the R15 V3 to litre-class superbikes like the R1, the Japanese company has indeed come a long way. During all these years, a few bikes have stood out and were considered the best of their times. This includes the RX100, RD350, RX135 to the current model of the R15. But how well does the old school charm of two-stroke motorcycles compare up against the modern technology of the R15; let’s check it out in the video below.
This video by Vikas Rachamalla pits an RX135 against an R15 V3 for a classic 0-60 drag race. Now while the RX135 is quite an old bike, do remember that it gets a stonker of a two-stroke engine which is the reason behind the popularity of the RX series. Also, the RX135 featured in this video has received a mild mechanical upgrade in the form of larger pistons which, according to its owner, has pushed the displacement to around 147 cc. Still, it is no match for the modern 155 cc engine on the R15 which is one of the most powerful 150 cc series engines on a production motorcycle in the world.
Talking about the drag race, the first round sees the RX135 win while the R15 has a slightly slow start. Do note that these drag races were being conducted on a closed road which had a limited stretch of tarmac and hence the drags are limited to 0-60 km/h criteria. In the second round, we see that the RX135 again blasts past the start mark and leaves behind the R15 but the latter catches on towards the end of the race since this time the track is a bit longer. The last round shows a similar outcome where the RX135 shows super quick acceleration but later on loses to the R15.
As for the verdict, the R15 wins two out of the three races here but considering the 0-60 times, the RX135 is a clear winner. The stock Yamaha RX135 has a 132cc, 2-stroke engine that churns out 14 Bhp of power and 12.25 Nm of torque. It has a kerb weight of 116 KGs, which again gives it a massive advantage over modern-day bikes. The Yamaha R15 V3, on the other hand, gets powered by a 155 cc engine that puts out 18.7 Bhp of power at 10,000 RPM along with 15 Nm of torque at 8,500 RPM. The engine comes mated to a six-speed gearbox and gets a slipper clutch as well. It comes equipped with a dual-channel ABS, VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) and the bike has a weight of 139 kg.
