Tata launched a special edition of the Harrier yesterday in a bid to revoke interest in the general public about the SUV. Christened the Dark Edition, it basically carries a mean-looking paint scheme and is based on the top-end XZ trim. The Harrier Dark edition is available for sale at Rs. 16.76 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) which actually is the exact same price that Tata demands for the dual-tone XZ variant of the Harrier. As its name suggests, the Harrier Dark Edition is draped in black all around with only a few bits breaking the monotonicity of black on the car. Even the interiors have been given the same black treatment and hence if black is a colour you’ve always loved, you’ll be in for a treat with the Harrier Dark edition. Till now, Tata didn’t offer a pure black colour shade on the Harrier, though two shades of grey were available. Apart from the all-black paint scheme on the outside, the dark edition also gets black and grey interiors. The faux wood trims on the dashboard have also been replaced by a ‘Blackstone Matrix’ insert. The brown bits on the interiors are now grey which has resulted in a darker but sportier cabin feel. Also, the seats are wrapped in Benecke-Kaliko Blackstone leather and get contrast grey stitching. The same material is also used on the door pads while the door handles get perforated Blackstone leather handles.
Exterior changes on the SUV include the new Atlas Black colour, 17-inch black alloy wheels, a special “Dark” moniker on the sides, grey headlamp bezels, blacked-out door handles and Blackstone front and rear skid plates. In terms of aesthetics, the Harrier Dark edition comes with numerous changes which enhance its appeal for the new-age buyers. However, there have been absolutely no mechanical changes on the SUV. Speaking of which, the Harrier Dark edition still gets powered by the same 2-litre KRYOTEC diesel engine that churns out 138 Bhp of power along with 350 Nm of torque.
The engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox that drives the front wheels. While a slightly retuned engine would have definitely made the Dark Edition a great package, doing so would have also resulted in a higher sticker price which is probably the reason Tata refrained from doing so. Tata is currently working on introducing a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox option on the Harrier by the end of this year which will result in a wider appeal for the SUV. The manufacturer will also launch the bigger 7-seater version of the Harrier during the first quarter of next year. Called the Buzzard/Cassini for now, it is likely to come with a more powerful 2.0-litre engine with outputs in the range of 170 Bhp.
