2020 Mahindra Thar five-door variant under development: What it could look like

Mahindra officially unveiled that all-new Thar in the Indian market a few days ago. Just like the first-generation model, which was discontinued in the Indian market last year, the all-new Thar offers only two-door set-up. While the Thar has become much more comfortable compared to the last-generation version, getting into the rear seats can become a hassle. Mahindra is reportedly working on the four-door version of the SUV. Here are a few rendering pictures that show what the all-new Thar with an extra set of doors may look like when it launches.

The rendering images have been shared by Ashutoshb on TeamBhp. The rendering images show a stretch version of the Mahindra Thar with a door for the rear passengers. To accommodate the door, the wheelbase has been extended, which will also increase the space inside the cabin. However, with such a long wheelbase, off-roading capabilities of the vehicle will be seriously hampered.

Mahindra may not put such wide rear doors to ensure that the wheelbase is not much longer than the two-door version. Mahindra may use narrower rear doors for the same. Also, it is also possible that Mahindra will serve the customers who want a family car with the four-door version of the Thar and will not offer 4X4 drivetrain. This way, the brand will be able to keep the cost of the vehicle low and serve the customers who want an intimidating looking vehicle for the family but is not interested in off-roading at all.

The all-new Thar will be launched on 2nd October 2020. That’s when the bookings for the all-new SUV will start too. The deliveries are expected to start by the middle of October. Officially, Mahindra is yet to announce anything on the all-new Thar’s four-door version. However, a few reports claim that the manufacturer is planning to launch the long-wheelbase version of the SUV next year.

With the all-new Thar, Mahindra has changed and updated a lot in the SUV. It is now based on a new Gen3 platform and for the first time ever, the Thar will offer a petrol engine and will get automatic transmission options. The all-new Mahindra Thar will get the 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 152 PS. It will get both manual and automatic transmission options. The diesel variants will get powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 132 PS. All the variants of the Thar, regardless of engine and transmission options will get 4X4 with low ratio transfer case as standard.
