Tata Motors has pushed back the launch of the 6 seat, Harrier-based SUV called the Gravitas, which was originally scheduled to make its debut during the last quarter of 2020. Tata Motors will now launch the Gravitas SUV in the first quarter of 2021. The Gravitas will be the new flagship SUV from the brand, and will sit above the Tata Harrier in terms of price and positioning.
In fact, the Gravitas closely resembles the Harrier in front-end styling, and also shares its mechanicals with the latter. Key changes are limited to a new top-hat, replete with a taller roof to give passengers at the rear more headroom, and a six seat layout with captain seats for all occupants. Prices of the Tata Gravitas are likely to start from a little under Rs. 15 lakh for the base trim. The Gravitas will take on the upcoming, all-new 2021 Mahindra XUV and the MG Hector Plus.

In terms of engines and gearboxes on offer, the Tata Gravitas will use the 2 liter-4 cylinder Fiat Multijet turbocharged diesel engine as standard. This engine makes 170 Bhp-350 Nm and is BS6 emission norms compliant. The engine is offered with 2 gearbox options on the Harrier: a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed torque converter automatic. Both gearboxes will drive the front wheels of the Tata Gravitas as well, and there will be no all wheel drive mode offered, even as an option.
What buyers will instead get is a terrain response system that varies torque between the two front wheels. This could help the SUV in mild off road trails if one of the front wheels lose traction. Like the Harrier, the Gravitas is expected to pack in a top-end trim with the panoramic sunroof. With the higher roof and the panoramic sunroof, the Gravitas promises to be a spacious, airy car.
Other key equipment on the new Tata SUV is likely to include 6 airbags, ESP, traction control, electric parking brake, ABS, hill hold, rough mode, cooled glove box, reverse parking sensors and camera, leather seats, soft touch leather finish for the dashboard, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, driver arm rest, keyless entry, push button start, a high quality stereo by audio specialist Harman and a touchscreen infotainment console with navigation and smartphone connectivity supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The SUV was showcased at this year’s Auto Expo as a concept model. However, the production version will be very similar to what was showcased at the Auto Expo. Tata Motors is highly regarded for building safe cars with excellent body strength. The Gravitas is expected to be no different. In due course of time, a turbocharged petrol engine option with manual and automatic gearboxes are expected on both the Harrier and Gravitas. The petrol engine option will make both SUVs more attractive to buyers who need a petrol SUV. Currently, only MG Motor and Jeep offer petrol engines in the Hector and Compass respectively.
