Tata Motors plans electric versions of Safari, HBX & more

Tata has gained the first-move advantage when it comes to the electric vehicles in India. The manufacturer has already become the biggest EV seller in India with the Nexon EV. Tata Motors plans to electrify more cars in their range including the upcoming HBX.

According to Autocar Professional‘s interview with Shailesh Chandra, President – PVBU, Tata Motors, all the cars in the Tata’s passenger vehicle portfolio are candidates in the future. Even the Tata Safari and the HBX included. You should note that Tata is already working to electrify the Tata Altroz and it is expected to be launched by the end of this year. With a wider range of passenger electric vehicles in the portfolio, Tata Motors will be able to target a much wider audience.

Without giving out details on the future products, Chandra said that all the cars in Tata Motors range are good candidates for the electrification of the products. Tata Motors does not plan to develop a car that will be electric-only. All the electrified cars to be launched by the manufacturer will be developed as ICE or Internal Combustion Engine vehicles. The new platforms like the OMEGA and the ALFA that underpins many Tata products in the market are capable of electrification. Tata made these platforms so that electric products can be launched in the future.

Tata Motors EV

Tata Motors entered the electric vehicle space last year. After winning the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (ESSL) bid in 2017 to supply Tigor EVs to the government, Tata Motors launched the Tigor EV in the passenger car market for the private car buyers in 2020. The Nexon EV is the best-selling EV in the Indian market and outsells the competitors like MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona EV by a big margin. The Nexon EV is also the most affordable electric SUV in the Indian market. However, it is still much more expensive than the standard Nexon powered by petrol and diesel engine options.

Tata Motors currently plans to launch the Altroz EV in the Indian market. The car is in the development stage. Tata Motors will launch the premium hatchback in EV version later this year. The vehicle will not have any competitor in the Indian market. It will be the brand’s first EV on the ALFA platform.

Later, when the HBX is launched in the market, Tata Motors will launch an electrified version of that car too. Tata Motors showcased the HBX at the 2020 Auto Expo and it is also based on the ALFA platform. The all-new car will be launched by December 2021 and the electric version is likely to follow in 2022 or later.

Tata currently has the highest market share when it comes to electric cars. The manufacturer will soon announce the price of the all-new Safari in the Indian market. At a later date, Tata may launch an electrified version of the Safari with a much longer range compared to the Nexon EV.
