Jeep India to launch 4 new SUVs in the next 18 months: Details

Jeep India is planning to expand its vehicle’s portfolio in India. They have already started the production of CKD or Completely Knocked Down units of the Wrangler which used to be earlier only CBU or Completely Built Unit. The next vehicle to follow the suit is the Grand Cherokee. The manufacturer also launched the facelift of the Compass last month. Jeep is currently planning to launch 4 new vehicles in the Indian market in a span of just 18 months.

Wrangler New

First, there will be the Wrangler, whose pre-bookings are already commenced. The SUV will go on sale in India on March 15. The Wrangler will be assembled at FCA’s Ranjangaon-based facility near Pune in Maharashtra. Because of the localization, the price of the Wrangler should fall, which will attract more people.

Partha Dutta, managing director, Jeep India said “Wrangler production is under way. We will start assembling Grand Cherokee by next year. The company will be assembling engines and axles fully at the Ranjangaon facility. The sub-assemblies of parts and components are being done by suppliers elsewhere in the country. Then we will bring them all together at our facility,”

After, the Wrangler, Jeep India will work on Completely Knocked Down units of the Grand Cherokee. It is also expected to be locally assembled at the FCA’s Ranjangaon facility. Then the manufacturer will be launching the all-new sub-4 meter SUV, which should help Jeep in capturing most of the market as there is a huge demand for compact-SUVs in the Indian market. Partha said “We are exploring a sub-4-meter SUV for India as the segment holds the highest volume. Our team is working on it day and night, the sub-4 meter SUV will hit the market after the launch of the Grand Cherokee.” He further added “Up to the beginning of next year, our network is adequate for our volumes. As we venture into the sub-4-meter SUV, the customer base and market will expand. The network coverage also will have to grow,”

Jeep will be using the underpinnings from the upcoming Citroen CC21 compact-SUV. So, the platform will be shared with Citroen. Also, Jeep is expected to use the same 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will produce around 100 PS of max power and 150 Nm of peak torque. Being a premium product the Jeep’s SUV will be priced higher than the Citroen with a more premium built interior.

Lastly, there will be the Jeep H6 which is a seven-seater SUV that will be based on the Compass. The H6 will be manufactured at the Chakan plant. As per previous reports, the 7-seat SUV will hit production in April 2022 while the launch is expected to happen in May or June of 2022. As we already know, that the H6 will share the underpinnings with the Compass facelift. So, till the B-pillar, the SUV will look a lot similar to the Compass. The differences will be a bigger rear door for more legroom and easy ingress and egress. The tailgate will be more upright for accommodating the third-row of seats. The rear of the SUV will be inspired by the Grand Cherokee L and the Grand Wagoneer Concept. Powering the new SUV will be the 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine which we have seen on the Compass but it will be producing around 200 PS.
