Biking has been a craze in India more than a practical purchase in recent times. With Bollywood and other celebrities endorsing superbikes, there was a sudden splurge in the biking industry. It came in the forms of enthusiasts testing their bikes on uncharted roads of different geographical demographics in the country or weekend biking groups. However, most of the superbikes cost as much as high-end cars and therefore become affordable only to a select few. There are a different set of enthusiasts who take a different route to procure these superbikes. They go ahead and import these bikes through illegal routes to minimize their taxes. With time, the customs have become very vigilant of such purchases and take strict actions against them. In some cases, the taxes even cross the actual value of the bike and therefore are seized by the customs, as the owner is unable to pay the amount. Here is one such story of a rare Ducati 1098 S Tricolore which was spotted and reported by T-BHP form the Kochi customs.
We call this a rare Ducati as only 1013 units have been manufactured and sold in the market. This bike gained popularity just after its launch in 2007 because of the colour. It has the colours of the Italian national flag which makes it look very distinctive. The Ducati 1098 S Tricolore was built around a tubular steel trellis frame. The Tricolore has been part of the Ducati line up since 1985 following its first bike launch called 750 F1.
Along with the colours of the Italian national flag, they also had a running gold colour on the frame of the wheels, which made it look even better. It was meant to be a track bike, as it came with a Termignoni race exhaust kit. Even the ECU was tuned to match the system. It comes with a 1099 cc L-Twin engine that churns a maximum of 160 Bhp at 9750 RPM and 123 Nm of torque at 8000 RPM. It comes with a 6-speed transmission gearbox which was standardised across all the units. In 2007, when the bike was launched, it had the highest torque to weight ratio amongst all superbikes across the world. This made the bike even more desirable for bike enthusiasts.

It became a head-turner on roads due to its single-sided swingarm. It also gets a fully adjustable suspension system. It comes with a 43mm Ohlins fork and Ohlins 46 PRC monoshock.
The S-variant of 1098 of the Tricolore signifies lightweight performance. The bike’s weight was reduced due to lightweight components like the tyres, brakes and even the alloy wheels. The forged alloy wheels are a whopping 1.9 kgs lighter than the regular bike. To reduce the weight further, it was fitted with a carbon fibre fender in the front.
Owing to the fact that the S 1098 Tricolore was launched as a track bike, it came with a standard Ducati Data Analyzer. The Analyzer helped the rider to compare their riding data from previous sessions.
We are still not sure as to why the bike is still spotted in the open parking, as a valued and rare possession like this is not meant to rot away in a public parking spot. We really hope that the owner makes necessary arrangements to save this rare edition Ducati. In India, there is a huge market for stolen parts of such expensive bikes.
