Maruti Alto to Toyota Innova: Top selling cars of India in 2020-2021

India is a growing market for cars and many manufacturers have entered our market after realising the potential. In the last one year, things have been different all around the world because of this ongoing pandemic. In India, it was only post lockdown that many manufacturers picked momentum. Here we have a list of top selling vehicles in 2020-2021. These vehicles have been divided on the basis of their segment.

Entry level hatchback

2019 Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 4

As the name suggests, these are the most affordable hatchbacks available in Indian market by any manufacturer. In this segment the most popular or best selling hatchback is undoubtedly Maruti Suzuki Alto. This is available with a petrol engine and comes with both petrol and CNG fuel options. Maruti Suzuki sold 1,58,992 units of Alto 800 in the market last year.

Hatchback

Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest car manufacturer and this segment is also dominated by a Maruti car. It is none other than the Swift. It has been a popular hatchback ever since its launch. Maruti launched a 2021 version of this hatchback earlier this year and that also helped it become the best seller in the segment. Maruti sold 1,72,671 units of Swifts hatchbacks across the country in last one year.

Sedan

Globally, demands for sedans have started to decrease as people are now interested in buying crossovers and SUVs. In comparison to SUVs or cars from any other segment, sedans are sold less in numbers. The best selling sedan in the year 2020-2021 is Honda City. They launched the fifth generation City in India post lockdown last year and the older generation is also available in the market. Honda sold a 25,057 units of City sedan in the market last year.

Executive sedan which is placed above mid-size sedan is also lead by another Honda sedan. It is the Honda Civic sedan which was launched in the market couple of years ago. unfortunately, due to low demand, Honda announced that they will be discontinuing the Civic from Indian market. Last year, Honda sold only 844 units of Civic.

SUV and MPV

SUVs are quite popular in Indian market especially the sub-4 meter compact SUVs. This segment is actually highly competitive and almost every manufacturer has at least one product in this segment. The best selling sub-4 meter compact SUV in the market last year has been the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. It is available with a petrol engine and comes with both manual and automatic transmission options. Maruti sold 94,635 units of Brezza last year.

Moving up, there is the mid-size SUV segment which is again a popular segment. The best selling SUV in this segment is Hyundai Creta. It rivals with cars like Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Tata Harrier in the segment. Creta is available with a variety of engine and transmission options. Hyundai sold 1,20,035 units of Creta SUVs in 2020-2021.

When it comes to premium and luxury SUVs, Jeep Compass and Toyota Fortuner are the top sellers respectively. Jeep sold 6,536 units of Compass SUV in the market and Toyota sold 11, 724 units of Fortuner SUV last year.

Toyota Innova Crysta is the most popular MPV in the segment. Toyota introduced a facelifted version of Innova Crysta in the market late last year. It now comes with updated interiors and exterior with cosmetic changes. It is popular among buyers for its comfort, reliability and low cost of maintenance. Toyota sold 37,934 units of Innova Crysta in the market last year.
