Maruti Suzuki Jimny LWB 5-door rendered

People were disappointed when CV Raman, engineering head of Maruti Suzuki announced that they do not have any plans to launch the Jimny in the Indian market.  However, recently a spec sheet of the new 5-door version of the Jimny was leaked online. More importantly, a long-wheelbase version of the Jimny was spied in Europe.  Also, the SUV now has a new codename as YWD. All of this might mean that the manufacturer is considering bringing the much-awaited SUV to the Indian market. Here, is a render of the 5-door version of the Jimny that has been done for IAB.

The artist has reimagined the front, the rear and the side profile of the 5-door Jimny. The render gives us a good idea about how the SUV might end up looking when it hits production.

In the render, we can see that the basic boxy design of the Jimny stays the same as the three-door one. So, at the front, there are circular headlamps with a projector setup. There is a vertical 5-slat grille with the Suzuki logo placed in the centre slat. The bumper has a functional look with a rectangular air dam while the fog lamps are placed towards the sides. Overall, the front is identical to the three-door Jimny that we have seen.

Then we come to the side profile which is where you would see the biggest differences. We can see that there is a set of rear doors placed for the rear occupants. The rear occupants also get their own windows and there are rear quarter windows also. Interestingly, the spy shots that we saw earlier had only one larger quarter window and there were no rear doors placed on that test mule. You get the same 5-spoke alloy wheels and chunky body cladding that we have seen on the regular Jimny.

At the rear, there are rectangular headlamps placed horizontally in the bumper. There is a side-hinged tailgate on which a spare wheel is mounted. There is a rectangular window placed so that the driver can look behind. The design is identical to the three-door version of the Jimny.

According to the spec sheet that leaked before, the 5-door  Jimny will have a 300 mm longer wheelbase than the 3-door. The new SUV’s wheelbase will measure 3,850 mm. Because of this, the length of the 5-door Jimny has also gone up by 300 mm. The added length and wheelbase will help in liberating more cabin space and generate more legroom for the rear occupants.

The rest of the dimensions such as the height, width and ground clearance remains the same. The Jimny 5-door will be 1,730 mm tall, 1,645 mm wide and will have a ground clearance of 210 mm. The 5-door Jimny will also be 100 kgs heavier than the 3-door one. It will weigh 1,190 kgs.

Powering the Jimny 5-door will be the same engine as the 3-door Jimny. It will be a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 102 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 130 Nm. The engine will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The SUV will come with a 4×4 powertrain. However, the lower variants of the SUV are expected to be offered as a front-wheel-drive configuration only. The 5-door Jimny is expected to launch by July 2022.
