Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG variants launch timeline revealed

Tata is working on CNG variants of the Tiago hatchback and Tigor compact sedan. Both the vehicles have been spied at a CNG station while they were waiting in a queue. Recently, the test mules were spied with a “Test BY ARAI” sticker on the rear glass and it also had an emission testing kit. This means that the new variants are ready for sale and according to the rumours the Tigor and Tiago CNG should get launched around Diwali.

Tata had earlier announced that they will be working on more CNG products. This means that we can see a CNG variant of the Altroz as well as Nexon in the future. However, nothing is confirmed as of now. There will be no cosmetic changes to both the vehicles except there might be some new badging to indicate that it is the CNG variant.

Having said that, the CNG tank would eat up into the boot space of both vehicles. Tiago has a boot space of just 242 litres. So, it would suffer a lot when it comes to practicality. On the other hand, Tigor has a boot space of 419 litres. So, there should be enough boot space left even after installing a CNG tank in the boot.

As of now, the prices of petrol and diesel have skyrocketed in our country. Many people are fitting CNGs to their current vehicles because the running costs of CNG are now significantly lower than petrol and diesel. Also, when the engine is running on CNG, it delivers better fuel economy too.

Mechanically, Tata would be using the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that would now be able to run on CNG too. People have been installing CNG in their Tiago and Tigor from after-market shops and they seem pretty satisfied with the performance. So, Tata might tune the engine differently so that it can perform better on CNG too.

This engine when running on petrol produces 86 bhp of max power and 113 Nm of peak torque. The engine is offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. While running on CNG, the engine would produce less power and torque figures. Also, it is very likely that Tata Motors would not offer the CNG variants with an AMT gearbox.

Another benefit of factory-fitted CNG is that you do not lose the factory warranty that Tata Motors offers. The Tiago CNG would go against Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG, WagonR CNG and Hyundai Santro CNG. Tata Tigor CNG would be competing against the Hyundai Aura CNG and Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG which was recently spied.

Upcoming launches

Tata showcased the HBX Concept at the Auto Expo 2020. It is a micro-SUV that will be going against the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Mahindra KUV100 NXT and the upcoming Hyundai AX1. There are rumours that the upcoming micro-SUV might be called “Timero”. It derives a lot of its styling from SUVs. So, the overall profile of the Timero is very boxy. Tata Motors said that the concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 was 95 percent close to the production-spec in terms of design.
