MG unveiled their all-new compact SUV Astor in the market last week and we also got a chance to experience this all-new SUV. MG has only unveiled the Astor SUV and according to reports, manufacturer will be announcing the prices for this compact SUV in the first half of October 2021. The MG Astor, when launched will compete with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks in the segment.
MG Astor is likely to be priced competitively and the manufacturer is expecting good response from customers. MG is also scaling up the production at Halol plant by the end of this quarter to 7,000 units. Gaurav Gupta, COO, MG Motor India, told ET, “Astor has started reaching our dealerships and the response to Astor has been strong. Currently, our facility in Halol is churning out around 50,000 vehicles annually. We aim to scale it up to 85,000 units by the end of next quarter (Q3 FY22).”
Astor is MG’s fourth product in the Indian market and is also likely to be the most affordable vehicle when launched. It will be positioned below MG Hector which was MG’s first ever product for Indian market. MG Astor is different from other SUVs in many ways. It offers several features that no other SUV in the segment offers. Astor is basically the rebadged version of facelifted ZS SUV that is sold in international market.

MG Astor is a currently one of the most feature loaded SUV in the market. It is the first car in the segment to offer a Autonomous Level-2 features. The ADAS offers features like Lane Keep Assist, Rear Drive Assist which includes, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Detection and Lane Change Assist. Astor also comes with features likes intelligent headlamp control where the high beam deactivated whenever the car detects a vehicle coming from opposite direction. Astor also offers adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and also detects the speed limit of a road using sign boards and slows down.
MG will be offering as many as 27 features as standard with the Astor. This includes ESP, Auto-calibrated traction control system and Hill Descent control which is a segment first feature. MG is also offering features like up to 6 airbags, 360 degree camera, 10.1 inch touchscreen infotainment screen, connected car services, inbuilt air purifier, automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, fully digital instrument cluster, virtual assistant on dashboard that rotates to driver and co-driver seat depending the place where the command comes from.
MG is offering two petrol engine options with Astor. There is a naturally aspirated unit and a turbo petrol unit. The naturally aspirated version uses is a 1.5 litre engine that generates 110 Ps and 144 Nm of peak torque. This engine comes with manual and a CVT gearbox option. The next is a 1.3 litre turbo petrol engine that generates 140 Ps and 220 Nm of peak torque. This is offered with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
