After a lot of anticipation, the Indian car market is finally going to receive the Toyota Hilux pickup truck. According to the latest reports, the current global iteration of the Toyota Hilux is all set for an official launch in January 2022. The Toyota Hilux is globally known for its bullet-proof reliability and rugged underpinnings known to last long.
The new Toyota Hilux is built on the same IMV-2 platform, on which Toyota’s other offerings like Innova Crysta and Fortuner are based. Essentially a pickup version of the Fortuner SUV with a flat deck in place of the third row of seats, the Hilux shares much of its front end and side profile till the B-pillar with the Fortuner. The stretched deck at the back gives it a total length of 5.3 metres, thus making it considerably longer than the Fortuner.
Toyota will position the Hilux as a premium pickup truck, having exterior elements like all-LED headlamps with daytime running LEDs, butch-looking hexagonal grille, chrome-finished door handles, tough body cladding, side steps, sculpted tail lamps and machined alloy wheels. For India, Toyota will be skipping the single cab version and launching only the double cab version, giving it a five-seater configuration.

Hilux shares parts with Innova Crysta and Fortuner
Inside, the Toyota Hilux will be sharing much of its components with the Innova Crysta and Fortuner, with the dashboard layout being more or less the same as that of the Fortuner. This indicates that the all-black cabin of the Hilux will get features like an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, multi-functional tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel, powered driver’s seat and TFT MID unit in the instrument console.
For the Hilux, Toyota will be plonking in either the 2.4-litre 150 bhp four-cylinder diesel engine of the Innova Crysta or the 2.8-litre four-cylinder 204 bhp four-cylinder diesel engine of the Fortuner. However, to keep the costs down, the 2.4-litre diesel engine makes more sense. Though, Toyota might bestow the higher variants with the more powerful 2.8-litre oil burner. It is not clear what all transmission options will be available for the Hilux. However, the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options from the Innova Crysta are the possible front runners here.
The Toyota Hilux will be competing with the only other lifestyle pickup truck available on Indian soil, the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross. However, given the Hilux wears a Toyota badge, expect it to be priced at a premium over the D-Max V-Cross, which will take its price in the range of Rs 25-30 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Toyota will be opting for the local production for the Hilux, given that a majority of its parts and components are shared with the Innova Crysta and Fortuner, thus keeping the prices of Hilux as low as possible.
