With the Altroz, Tata Motors has managed to affirm its presence in the compact car space, which also includes the likes of Tiago, Tigor, Punch and Nexon. The Tata Altroz was the Indian carmaker’s first shot in the premium hatchback category.
Thanks to its stunning design in and out and impeccable build quality and safety levels, the Altroz has become a top favourite among hatchback buyers. However, the biggest gripe in the lineup of Tata Altroz has been the absence of automatic variants, which has forced many potential buyers to skip over it.
However, this might change soon, as Tata is reportedly working on the automatic gearbox-equipped variant of the Altroz. Recently, a test mule of fully camouflaged Altroz was spied by Powerdrift doing test runs, which is believed to be the automatic version of the premium hatchback. Going by this, the Tata Altroz automatic might witness a possible launch in India sometime in 2022.

Which automatic transmission will come with the Altroz?
There are two possible iterations, one of which the Tata Altroz automatic will be introduced with The first possibility is that of an automatic version of the regular naturally aspirated version of the Altroz, which is powered by a 1.2-litre 86 PS petrol engine. There are chances that Tata might introduce a CVT or conventional torque converter with this naturally aspirated petrol engine in the mid-spec and higher variants. If this happens, the Tata Altroz will take on the CVT variants of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza and Honda Jazz.
The second possibility is that of the automatic iteration of the iTurbo variants of the Tata Altroz. The Tata Altroz is also available with a more powerful 1.2-litre turbocharged 110 PS petrol engine, which is currently offered only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. There are chances that Tata Motors might make this engine available with an optional dual-clutch automatic gearbox or a CVT, which will enhance the driving experience of the iTurbo variants even more. In such a case, the Tata Altroz iTurbo automatic might challenge the performance-oriented hatchbacks like Hyundai i20 N-Line and Volkswagen Polo GT.
Altroz also offers a diesel engine
The Tata Altroz is also available with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is currently offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. Given the limited demand for diesel-powered hatchbacks in recent times, it is safe to say that the diesel variants of the Altroz won’t get the option of an automatic gearbox. The only diesel-automatic hatchback currently available in India is the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT.
The Tata Altroz is one of the consistent selling models in the hatchback category and is offered with three engine options, all of which are mentioned above. In the range-topping XZ Plus variants available with all the three powertrain options, the Altroz comes with features like projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs, LED tail lamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, cruise control, 7-inch TFT MID in instrument console, rear AC vents and push the start-stop button. The Altroz is one of the few cars in India to score a 5-star rating in Global NCAP crash tests.
