Homemade cars of India: From a mini Gypsy to Volkswagen Beetle

India has an abundance of the talent pool. Car enthusiasts are known to be so passionate that they made cars in their homes themselves. We’ve covered a few of such talented people in the past. This is about four homemade cars made in India. While there are many homemade cars in India, these four represent the best executed projects.

Mini Jeep

As you can guess, this is a mini version of Jeep. Usually, miniature automobiles are made from small motorcycle engines or chainsaw motors. This mini Jeep is powered electrically. The electrical unit including the wiring, converter and battery is neatly tucked in behind the seats. It runs on a 750W motor that is connected to a 48V battery pack. The driving range on a full charge is about 40kms and the top speed is 50 km/h. They have also included reverse gear for ease. The custom job is done by Sudus customs.

The parts are sourced from various automobiles. The tyres are from an autorickshaw, front shock absorbers are from TVS XL 100, the rear suspension is from Hero Splendor and the headlights and fog lamps seem to be from some car.

Smallest Maruti Gypsy

Gypsy used to be a rage when it was launched in the Indian market. It was the car that introduced off-roading to a lot of Indians. You’d still be able to spot some of them on Indian roads easily. Here we have a mini Gypsy made by Zakir Khan.

The vehicle is covered with a flashy bright neon paint job with decals. It is powered by an 848 cc, 4-cylinder petrol engine procured from the Sipani Dolphin hatchback. It also comes with proper 4-speed transmission. The mini Gypsy is 3-feet high and it also comes with a pick-up style bed. The top speed on this Gypsy is claimed to be 140 km/h.

Maruti Eeco modified into a sportscar

This is one of the best homemade modification jobs. A Maruti Eeco converted to look like a sports car. The inspiration for the design is taken from the Lamborghini Veneno and the Bugatti Veyron. It took two years to complete this car. The total cost of the project was about INR 12 Lakhs.

As we know, in Eeco the engine is placed between the front seat, the creator of this sportscar moved the engine to the rear. It also gets scissor doors as seen in exotic high-end sportscars.

Volkswagen Beetle

Volkswagen Beetle is an extremely popular car due to its unique design. This one is also made by Sudus Custom. They sourced the parts from this car from various vehicles as well. The LED lights are aftermarket, the headlights and tyres are from an autorickshaw, the bumper from a crash guard of a motorcycle, mirrors from the TVS Fiero FX and door handles from a Hindustan Ambassador.

The engine is taken from a Suzuki Samurai. It comes with a two-stroke engine that gives a fuel efficiency of about 30kmpl. This one also comes with reverse gear. The engine is mounted neatly in the rear. It comes with a self-start and also a kick starter. The project took about 90 days and the total cost was INR 40,000.
