Rivals
Tata Punch currently competes against the Mahindra KUV100 NXT, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite. Because of the pricing, it also has to go against Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet.
Drivetrain
Punch is offered only with 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. It produces 86 PS of max power and 113 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed AMT or a 5-speed manual gearbox. Yes, this is the same engine that is doing duty on the Tata Tiago and Tigor. There are also two driving modes on offer namely, Eco and City.
Upcoming engines
Tata Motors is considering different versions of Punch. According to media rumours, the homegrown manufacturer has already started working on a turbocharged petrol engine. It will be derived from the Altroz iTurbo. So, it would also be a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder unit but this time it will be turbocharged. In Altroz iTurbo, the engine produces 108 bhp of max power and 140 Nm of peak torque. For Punch, the manufacturer might retune it to produce less power and deliver more fuel efficiency.
Some media reports also claim that Tata might launch Punch with a diesel engine. If this happens then it would be the same 1.5-litre diesel engine that is doing duty on Altroz and Nexon. However, it would also be detuned to suit the requirements of Punch.
Punch scored 5 stars in GNCAP crash test
Tata Punch is currently the safest vehicle that you can buy in the Indian market. It scored 5 stars in the crash test done by Global NCAP. Punch is based on the ALFA platform that is also being used on the Altroz.
Upcoming Tata vehicles
Tata Motors is working on expanding its line-up. They will be adding a petrol engine to the Safari and the Harrier. It will be a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit that will produce around 160 bhp. The manufacturer is also working on a new mid-size SUV that has been codenamed Blackbird. It will first be launched as an electric vehicle then it will get internal combustion engines. Moreover, Tata Motors will also be bringing back Sierra SUV but only as an electric vehicle. The Nexon EV would also soon get an extended-range variant.
