Delhiites would welcome this on a Monday – no more masks in cars!

As the number of new and active COVID-19 cases in the country have started to dip down the governments of various states are now slowly easing up their restrictions. This Saturday the government of Delhi, during a meeting to review Covid curbs, announced that it is lifting all the COVID-19 restrictions and people will now be allowed to travel in private four-wheelers without the mandate of wearing masks.

Last Friday, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), conducted by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal in attendance of Delhi Cheif Minister Arvind Kejriwal publicized that all the COVID-19 restrictions in Delhi will be withdrawn from Monday onwards and fines for not wearing masks will be reduced from Rs 2000 to Rs 500. The DDMA has also allowed the commencement of physical classes in schools of Delhi from the 1st of April 2022.

DDMA in the recent order said, “after examining all the relevant facts related to the issue of penal provisions for not adhering to the Covid protocol of wearing of a mask at public places, decided that…not wearing of face mask/cover in all public places has been made an offence, the penalty under this provision of the said notification will not be applicable to persons travelling together in private four-wheeler vehicle with the effect 28.02.2022.”

The order further stated, “Accordingly, Covid-19 situation in Delhi has been reviewed in DDMA meeting held on 25.02.2022 under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Lt Governor, Delhi wherein it has been observed that numbers of Covid-19 cases and positivity rate have declined significantly, also the occupancy of beds in hospitals is very low and the situation has vastly improved and therefore it is decided to remove all the restrictions in NCT of Delhi imposed by DDMA,”

Additionally, the government of Delhi also added that it “directs to remove all prohibitions/restrictions imposed vide aforesaid orders of DDMA in the territory of NCT of Delhi w.e.f. intervening night of 27th February, 2022 and 28th February, 2022 (00:00 hrs) till further orders, except that the blended/hybrid mode (online & offline) of learning and consent from parents is to be followed in respect of students up to class 9th as well as for class 11th till 31.03.2022 in Schools, Educational/Coaching Institutes.”

DDMA in light of the falling number of COVID-19 cases in the city on Friday said that the night curfews will also end from Monday and following which shops, restaurants, and other establishments can remain open till late at night.

The national capital recorded 440 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths on Saturday, while the case positivity rate stood at 0.83 per cent, the city’s health department data shows.
