New Tata Safari struggling on a muddy slope shows why AWD/4×4 system is so critical [Video]

Tata launched the all-new Safari SUV in the market last year and it quickly became popular among buyers. The all-new Safari competes with cars like Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus in the segment. The Safari is actually based on Tata’s popular 5-seater SUV Harrier which was launched in the market in 2019. Tata offers Safari with Terrain Response System but, it is actually a front wheel drive SUV which is not recommended for off-road use. Here we have a video that shows why one must not take a front wheel drive SUV off-road.

The video has been uploaded by All in One Entertainment on their YouTube channel. The vlogger was carrying some stuff in his Tata Safari through a very rough patch of road. The vlogger was driving the SUV through some rough sections and after some point, they came across a steep slope where the Safari was unable to find any grip.

The SUV as mentioned above is a front wheel drive vehicle and that is not the best option when you want climb a slope. What made things even more challenging was that it was quite slippery. It is not proper tarmac but, mud road. The highway terrain tyres and the slippery mud were not helping the Safari in this situation. Vlogger then took the car in reverse and tried to climb again with some momentum.

This helped the SUV to some extent although the wheels were spinning, the SUV was slowly making progress. Halfway through the slope, one of the wheel got stuck in a track made by another SUV that had crossed the path. The vlogger came out of the SUV and said the luggage that is kept in the rear of the SUV is also making things a lot more challenging as the weight is not being put of the front wheels were all the power is being sent.

He could be heard saying in the video that even a small hatchback like Maruti 800 easily climbs this section but, as there is weight at the rear of the SUV, climbing up is becoming a task. He said if Safari was a rear wheel drive SUV, then it would have climbed up as the rear wheels get maximum traction while climbing because of the weight at the rear. Many rear wheel drive SUVs like Mahindra Scorpio and Mahindra climb up this section often.

The main reason why it struggled in the slope is because of the lack of a 4×4 or an AWD system. If the Safari came with any of these features, then the power would have been sent to all the wheels. Whenever one of the wheels loose traction, the power that is being sent to the other wheels would help it move forward. Currently, Mahindra XUV700 is the only SUV in the segment that offers AWD system as an option (in the top-end diesel AT). This does not mean Tata Safari is a bad SUV by any means. Tata Safari is meant for good road and  bad roads but, not off-road conditions like this.
