2022 Mahindra Scorpio’s base variant caught on video

Mahindra has been working on the new generation Scorpio for a long time now. The test mules have been spotted many times. Now, the base variant of the 2022 Scorpio has been caught on video. The new-gen Scorpio is expected to get launched by the end of this year.

The video is uploaded on YouTube by Mumbiker Nikhil. In the video, we get to see the new test mule for a few seconds. The SUV is running on steel wheels so we know that it is the base variant. There is a rear bumper protector also installed on the Scorpio. So, Mahindra might offer it as an accessory when the SUV finally launches. Well, we will have to wait for the official launch.

The design of the tail lamps is also visible clearly. They look a bit Volvo-like but they are an evolution of the previous-gen Scorpio’s tail lamps. There is a rear door handle which means that the rear tailgate will still open sideways. Moreover, some media reports suggest that the base variant of the Scorpio will come with side facing third-row seats instead of front-facing ones.

One thing that can be noticed is that the 2022 Scorpio looks bigger than the current version. Yes, the 2022 Scorpio will be bigger but in the video, it looks excessively large because of the wide-angle lens that the vlogger is using. It gets regular door handles instead of the motorized and flush-sitting units that are found on XUV700.

The SUV still looks muscular with a new set of headlamps that use dual projector units. We have seen Mahindra testing the Scorpio with LEDs and halogens as well. Then there are the new C-shaped LED Daytime Running Lamps that surround the fog lamp housings. The overall profile is still boxy so it has a flat bonnet and squared-off design elements that give it a proper SUV-like look.

There are new alloy wheels too which are expected to be diamond-cut units. They measure 17-inches and fill the wheel well perfectly. The new alloy wheels will be wrapped in 245/65 tyres that are sourced from MRF Wanderer. When compared the new tyres are wider as the current Scorpio runs on 235/65 tyres. From the previous spy shots, we also know that there will be side steps to make ingress and egress more manageable. There will be roof rails also but as of now, we do not know whether they will be functional or only for cosmetic purposes.

Mahindra will offer the Scorpio with two engines. There will be a 2.2-litre diesel engine which will be offered in two states of tune and there will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that gets a direct injection. Both will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The lower state of tune of the diesel engine will be offered on the lower variant which will be priced very competitively. It will come mated to only the manual gearbox. On the higher variants, the power output could be around 155 Ps whereas the petrol engine should produce around 180 Ps.
