Amitabh Bachchan is considered a legend in the Bollywood film industry. He is also a well known automotive enthusiast. He owns sports cars, luxury MPVs, saloons and SUVs too. However, the first car a person owns always stays close to his/her heart and holds a special place. Amitabh Bachchan is no different. Last year, he received the Ford Prefect, which was owned by the Bachchan family decades ago, which left Mr. Amitabh Bachchan “speechless”.
The Prefect was gifted to Amitabh Bachchan by a close friend whose name is Anant Goenka. Anant knew that the Bachchan family used to have a Ford Prefect and is quite special to Amitabh Bachchan. The Prefect was the first family car for the Bachchans’. They bought it back in the 1950s. Back then, the Bachchan family used to stay in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
In a tweet, Amitabh Bachchan said,
“There are times when you are speechless .. I am now .. been trying to express, but nothing comes out .. .. a story of times gone by .. a gesture beyond time ..”
Amitabh Bachchan is known to write blogs and he even numbers his tweets. The Ford Prefect that the Bollywood actor received is finished in a bright yellow colour which is the original factory colour back when the family used to own the Prefect. As we can see in the picture, the number plate is also vintage that was issued by the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Apparently, Amitabh Bachchan wrote a blog about the Ford Prefect. Anant read the blog and decided to look for the Prefect. It was a bit difficult for him to find the vehicle considering it is a vintage car. However, somehow he finally found one in Mysore. He brought it to Mumbai and restored it. Then Anant drove the car to Amitabh Bachchan’s house.
Amitabh Bachchan can be seen driving the vehicle around his home. The registration number plate is the same one that the family had. This is what makes the vehicle special and brings back memories to the actor. After driving the car, Amitabh Bachchan was overwhelmed and decided to write another blog for thanking the friend.
Ford Prefect
The Prefect falls under Ford’s British series of cars. It was manufactured by Ford UK from 1938 to 1961. It was essentially an up-market version of the Ford Anglia and Ford Popular. In fact, the Prefect was the first car of Ford that was not developed in Detroit, Michigan. It was designed and built-in Dagenham, Essex. Only 2 lakh units were sold worldwide. The Prefect came with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that gets a 3-speed manual transmission.
Except for the Prefect, Amitabh Bachchan also owns a Mercedes-Benz V Class, Bentley Continental GT, Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography, Toyota Innova Crysta, Lexus LX570, Mercedes-Benz S Class, Mini Cooper S, Toyota Land Cruiser, Audi A8L etc. He also used to own a Lamborghini Murcielago, Porsche Cayman S and Rolls Royce Phantom.
