Recently, a test mule of the Hyundai Alcazar was spotted in Pune. The rear of the SUV was camouflaged. Considering that the Alcazar is already on sale, it leads us to believe that it could be the CNG version of the Alcazar. So, the CNG version of the Alcazar could launch by the end of this year.
Cosmetically, the Alcazar CNG remains the same as the regular Alcazar. As of now, we do not know which engine is Hyundai testing but we do know that it will be a petrol unit. Recently, a test mule of Kia Carens was spotted with a CNG filling nozzle. The Carens come with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine so either Hyundai could use the same engine in the Alcazar or they could modify the existing 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated engine to support the CNG powertrain.
The Alcazar’s 2.0-litre petrol engine produces 159 PS of max power and 191 Nm of peak torque. The 1.4-litre turbo petrol of Kia Carens produces 140 Ps of max power and 242 Nm of peak torque. While running on CNG, the power and torque outputs will fall. Both the engines come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox which will be offered on the CNG powertrain too. If you get the regular version then you can get a 6-speed torque converter with the Alcazar and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with the Carens.

The 2.0-litre engine of the Alcazar is the same one that is also found on the Tucson and Elantra. However, Hyundai did update the engine and made some changes. The manufacturer claimed that Alcazar can hit 100 kmph in under 10 seconds. The claimed fuel efficiency of the engine is 14.5 kmpl but this will increase with the CNG powertrain. If you get the 2.0-litre AT then the claimed fuel efficiency is 14.2 kmpl.
There is also a 1.5-litre diesel engine on offer that does duty on both, the Carens and Alcazar. The engine produces 115 PS of max power and 250 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Kia Sonet CNG spotted
Kia Sonet’s CNG version has also been spotted on road. It had CNG filler just behind the fuel filler cap. A CNG plate was also mounted on the C-pillar. Usually, the CNG powertrains are offered with naturally aspirated engines but it seems like Kia is not going down that route.
The Carens is offered only with turbo petrol and they will launch a CNG version of it. Then the Sonet which was spotted in its GT Line trim. This trim is only offered with the turbo petrol engine. It comes with a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that comes with direct injection. It produces 120 Ps of max power and 172 Nm of peak torque. Obviously, when the engine will be using CNG as fuel, it will produce less power and torque figures.
The engine comes mated to a 6-speed intelligent manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. If Sonet does come with a turbo petrol-CNG powertrain then we expect it to get a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed iMT.
