Metro changed the way that people travel in some cities. It has been incredibly successful and convenient for people to travel long distances. Now, India’s first Water Metro has been launched in Kochi. The water metro will resolve the travel issues of people who live on islands or have to go on islands for their work.
In the video, we can see that the water metro looks like a hybrid of a train and a boat. It gets a nice shade of white and blue paint. There will be a total of 38 terminals that will connect 10 islands via the water metro. 78 water metros will be doing duty to connect these islands.

There will be two kinds of boats, a big one and a small one. The big ones will carry 100 passengers while the small ones will carry 50 passengers. The first boat has already been launched which we can see in the video whereas the keel-laying ceremony of two other boats has already been done which basically means that the construction of two other boats has already started.
The stations for the water metro look just like the traditional train metro. In the video, we can see people already using the water metro. The construction of five more terminals is being done right now. They are expected to be completed by June of this year. The terminals at Cheranelloor, High Court, Bolgatty, Vypeen and South Chittoor are currently in the final stages of construction. Moreover, the construction of the terminals in Eloor, Kakkanad and Vytilla has already been completed. The agency that is implementing all this is called Kochi Metro Rail Limited or KMRL.
The first route that has become operational for the water metro is the Vypeen-Bolgatty-High Court stretch. The metros are being built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). As mentioned above one boat has already been delivered while others are on their way and will be delivered in the next few months.
The trial runs of the first water metro were conducted in March. It was done between Vyttila and Kakkanad terminals. During the trial run, the boat covered a distance of 5 km in 20 minutes. The Water Metro service will become fully functional after at least 5 boats are delivered by Cochin Shipyard Limited to Kochi Metro Rail Limited. This is not the first time that such a transport service has been launched by the government. There used to be a boat service but it was not able to attract customers because there were no feeder services from the Kakkanad jetty area. So, seems like the water transport department would have to sort out this issue also.
Till now, 15 routes have been identified as routes. These routes will connect 38 terminals spread across 10 islands and boatyards. The total distance of the 15 routes is 76 km. These routes will solve the travelling issues of islanders that reside in Vypeen, Mulavukad, Vyttilla, Kakkanad, Eloor, Nettoor, Kumbalam, Wellington, Bolgatty and Edakochi regions.
