The ongoing severe heatwave in northern, western and central parts of India has broken several records of temperatures, with many parts experiencing temperatures above 40 degrees C in April itself. Due to the severely hot climate, it has become very difficult for people and motorists to go out in the open during the daylight hours. Amidst such a soaring climatic condition, a unique incident from Orissa is catching everyone’s attention.

In a video which is going viral on social media, a woman in the Sonepur region from Odisha is seen making chapatis on a car’s bonnet. The video is shared by a resident from Sonepur named Nilamadhab Panda, who in her tweet stated that it’s so hot in her hometown that one can make chapatti on a car’s bonnet.

In the video, it is seen that the woman is rolling the chapatti on a stand and is then cooking the chapatti on the bonnet of a Renault Kwid, which is parked in an open area under direct sunlight. Due to the hot temperature, the bonnet of the Kwid has heated up enough to allow a suitable cooking temperature for the chapatti.
The video has become viral
The video has attracted the attention of many netizens who have expressed their concerns on the issue. While some are just amazed to see such an incident in real-life, some even said that solar energy is the future of India. Some are even concerned that if April is this severely hot, how difficult the situations can be in the next two peak months of summer.
We have seen such instances in films and cartoons, but such an incident is rare in the real world. While this incident of cooking chapattis on the car’s bonnet might look amusing, it indicates the gruesome situation of changing climatic conditions in the country. In many parts of the country, schools and colleges have shut down due to severe heatwave conditions. Several regions have reported an increase of 3-5 degrees C in temperature as compared to the same time in the previous years.
Currently, the northwesterly-westerly dry air and high solar insolation in the majority parts of the country have resulted in a severe heatwave, which has made the lives of people difficult. Several motorists, especially motorcycle and scooter riders, are facing extreme difficulties in heading out of their homes or workplaces. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heatwave is expected to continue for one more week.
