Why do people of Mizoram always obey traffic rules? [Video]

Recently, a picture of Mizoram went viral on the internet. In the picture, we could see the lane discipline of motorists of Mizoram. Even Anand Mahindra applauded and tweeted about the picture. Here, is a video, in which we can see citizens of Mizoram explaining why they do not break traffic rules.

The video starts by showing the usual traffic on our Indian roads. We can see traffic jams, people breaking traffic rules and some people driving very rashly. Then they show us the traffic of Mizoram where we can see everyone following traffic rules. Some people also think that the people of Mizoram are the epitome of patience and discipline. Mizoram is also referred to as the “Silent City of India”.

We can see a clip of Mizoram, everyone is following traffic rules and driving responsibly. No one is even honking. No one is overtaking, everyone is staying in their lane and not crossing the line. Cars always stick to the left side whereas the two-wheelers are on the right side. In other cities, we have seen the opposite of this, the two-wheelers would try to cross the traffic from the left-hand side of the cars which could be dangerous.

They say that it is part of the mutual respect which is in their culture. According to their people, it is in their nature to take care of others because of which they follow all the traffic rules. They do not overtake people brutally and do not change lanes. A resident says that people of Mizoram has civic sense and they do not want to trouble others.

Even if someone is in a hurry, they would just honk the horn twice. By just listening to the slight horn honk, the person realizes that either he or she is driving too slowly or the person who honked is in a hurry and the driver should let him or her go ahead. Once there is enough space for the person behind to overtake, the driver in the front takes his car to the left and lets the other person overtake him or her. The person who is overtaking then honks the horn again as a thank you.

At many intersections, there are no traffic lights or even division of road. A traffic cop’s whistle is doing the job. He controls the traffic using his whistle and hand gestures only. When asked whether they feel like cutting the lanes to reach somewhere early, the residents say that they would feel ashamed to do that and it is not safe for the pedestrians.

Anand Mahindra wrote on Twitter after watching the picture, “What a terrific pic; Not even one vehicle straying over the road marker. Inspirational, with a strong message: it’s up to US to improve the quality of our lives. Play by the rules… A big shoutout to Mizoram.”
