Skoda Slavia catches fire while parked in the parking lot [Video]

Skoda Slavia marked the first sedan to be made on the India-specific MQB A0 IN platform. While the Slavia and its cousin Volkswagen Virtus have become quite popular in the market, here is a shocking incident where the owner claims that the sedan has caught fire on its own.

The owner Abhishek Bhatia is from Lucknow and says that he is a government official. The incident happened in June earlier this year but the videos came out just now. In the video, Abhishek Bhatia shows the Slavia parked in the basement. According to the owner, he parked the car at 10 PM at night and at around 3 AM, it caught fire on its own.

The owner says that the Skoda Slavia’s security alarms went off around the same time. That’s when the guard wakes the family. The owner also says that there were multiple blasts in the car and the fire was out of control. The owner used multiple fire extinguishers and even fire attendees came but could not control the fire.

According to the owner, the car was registered in March and the odometer reading indicates that the vehicle has done only 4,000 km. Abhishek claims that he posted the video on Twitter but Skoda officials requested him to take down the video. He took down the video after multiple requests.

Skoda India team also came to inspect the vehicle but no action has not been taken yet. Abhishek Bhatia also says that there were no external modifications or accessories installed in the vehicle. It is the top-end variant of the car.

A tussle between insurance provider and Skoda

The video further claims that Skoda India asked Abhishek to directly contact the insurance and get the claim. However, after a tussle of four months with the insurance provider, they finally said that the inspection revealed manufacturing defects. However, Skoda India did not accept the charges of manufacturing defects and continued the argument.

After settling down, Abhishek finally received a new replacement car. However, it is not clear if the insurance paid for the new car or if it was Skoda that replaced the old vehicle with a new one.

Abhishek is yet to receive the new car. According to him, the North India service head of Skoda India told him that the top variant is not available so the company will provide him with the variant that is readily available. However, this is an ongoing discussion.

Isolated incident

Car catching fire is a major incident. However, till now, this is the only recorded incident of the Skoda Slavia catching fire. There can be multiple reasons behind the fire.

Designed and engineered with the MQB A0-IN platform as the base, the new Skoda Slavia came in as a replacement for the popular Rapid. Since its arrival, the Slavia has shown its mettle as yet another popular selling model from Skoda. Launched as a petrol-only sedan, the new Skoda Slavia is available with two petrol engine options – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged 115 PS engine and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

Apart from a 6-speed manual gearbox offered as standard across the range, the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre variants are also offered with a 6-speed torque converter and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox respectively, as optional transmissions.
