Let’s see how an EV fares against a powerful turbo petrol ICE vehicle in a drag race. Volkswagen Virtus GT compared to Tata Nexon EV MAX in terms of initial acceleration.
In recent times, drag races to compare and check the limits of vehicles have become a common norm in India. Every Now and then you will come across videos on various social media platforms, where people are doing high-speed runs on public roads to test their vehicles. Such activities carry a lot of risks unless and until conducted in a controlled environment with all the necessary precautions. We do not endorse these activities and advice all our readers not to indulge in such acts.
The drag race in the YouTube video by ‘Pratham Shokeen’ seems to be conducted on an unused and vacant stretch of road and drivers are wearing proper seat belts. The Volkswagen Virtus GT competes against the likes of Tata Nexon EV MAX in this drag race.

Volkswagen Virtus GT VS Tata Nexon EV MAX: Vehicle Details and Results
In the drag race, the first vehicle is the latest executive performance-oriented sedan, the Volkswagen Virtus GT. It competes against a brand new Tata Nexon EV MAX. Talking about power figures, powering the Virtus is a 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine churning out 148 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox with paddle shifters. On the other hand, the Tata Nexon EV MAX uses a 40.5 kWh battery pack mated to an electric motor, putting out 143 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. It comes with a claimed ARAI electric range of 437 kilometres on a single charge. One interesting aspect is that the company claimed 0-100 kmph timing of both the vehicles is around the 9 seconds mark, however, the top speed of Nexon EV is limited to 140 kmph.
Now coming to the drag race, several rounds were conducted and the results were quite mixed-up. In the first round, both the vehicles were in their most powerful Sports mode and the Virtus GT lunged ahead with a heavy wheel spin and defeated the Nexon EV MAX by a huge margin. In the second round, the presenter decided to do a normal launch to keep the conditions fair as the EV cannot have an aggressive launch. In this round, the Tata Nexon EV took the lead and won the drag race. In the third round, the Virtus GT was again launched aggressively and this time, it managed to win the race. In the rolling race, the Nexon EV MAX won by a heavy margin, however, the Virtus GT was quick enough to catch up after the EV hit its top speed of 140 kmph.
Volkswagen Virtus GT VS Tata Nexon EV MAX drag race: Verdict
The power figures of both vehicles are almost similar, however, a major difference lies in the way the power is delivered. In the Tata Nexon EV MAX, all the power and torque is delivered from the get-go, while on the other end of the spectrum, the Virtus GT delivers its peak power and torque between 5000-6000 rpm and 1600-3500 rpm respectively. Another important factor to consider is the body type of both the cars as the Virtus is a low-slung sedan with good aerodynamics while the Nexon EV’s SUV body type serves as a disadvantage in a drag race. The Nexon EV MAX is also heavier than the Virtus GT in terms of kerb weight. So the results of the drag race were totally dependent on the way the vehicles were launched and the Nexon EV MAX winning the rolling race can be attributed to its quick power delivery.
