Rahul Gandhi rides on Royal Enfield Classic 500 Desert Storm [Video]

There are very few politicians in India who have a thing for two-wheelers. While most Indian politicians prefer being chauffeured in their official rides assigned by the government, there are a few politicians like Uddhav Thackerey and Omar Abdullah who prefer to be behind the steering wheel of their cars. However, there’s a rare chance of a politician riding a motorcycle. We came across one such rare sight when Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was seen riding a motorcycle.

In a Twitter post uploaded by an Indian National Congress member Srinivas BV, Rahul Gandhi is seen riding a Royal Enfield Classic 500 Desert Storm, while being surrounded by a crowd running after him to catch a glimpse of the politician. Rahul Gandhi is currently leading Indian National Congress’ ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, in which he is walking from South India to North India while crossing prominent cities and rural parts of the country.

The video shows a short clip of Rahul Gandhi riding the Classic 500. While the crowd of people are seen running behind and along with him, the politician is also seen being guarded by the security guards in front of him, who are also running along with him.

Rahul Gandhi riding Classic 500 Desert Storm

The video of Rahul Gandhi riding the Royal Enfield Classic 500 Desert Storm has gone viral on social media platforms, as there are very rare chances of a politician riding a motorcycle. This video has caught the attention of several netizens. While some are praising the politician for his humbleness, many are calling this a publicity stunt to gain attention.

The Royal Enfield Classic 500 was one of the most sought-after motorcycles from the renowned neo-retro motorcycle manufacturer. Positioned above the Classic 350, the Classic 500 got the same body panels as those of the Classic 350. However, the Classic 500 got a larger engine compared to the Classic 350, which was a single-cylinder, air-cooled, 499cc engine, which at one point in time, was the largest single-cylinder engine from Royal Enfield.

Paired with a 5-speed gearbox, the 499cc engine of the Royal Enfield Classic 500 pumped out 27.57 PS of maximum power and 41 Nm of maximum torque. The Classic 500 was available in multiple colour options, with the Desert Storm having its fan base. Due to its similarity to the official colour shade allowed for vehicles of armed forces and its matte finish, the Desert Storm gained a lot of popularity. The Classic 500 was discontinued in 2019 ahead of the implementation of BS6 emission norms.

Politicians sleeping in moving containers

While Rahul Gandhi will be covering the entire distance on his feet, accompanied by state representatives and ‘Atithi Yatris’ at times, the party has made arrangements for the night stay at temporary campsites, wherever the participants will be stopping. For these stays, the party has arranged 60 large containers mounted on trucks, which will be stationed wherever the programme will take a halt.

These 60 containers are accommodating 230-250 ‘Padyatris’ and are specially made to offer basic arrangements for night shelters. All these containers come equipped with beds and mattresses. While some containers come equipped with only one bed, some have up to 12 beds. There are also two-bed and four-bed containers. Every day, these containers move to a new site or town where the rally heads.
