Toyota Innova Crysta top-end trims discontinued

Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited (TKML) has pulled the best-selling Innova Crysta from its website, prompting speculations that the MPV would be discontinued to make way for the Innova HyCross. This may not be accurate though. According to ZigWheels, the Innova Crysta will come back soon, but only in lower trims, with the 2.4 liter diesel engine as standard.

The lower trims of the Toyota Innova Crysta will be aimed at the cab operator market while the Innova HyCross will be positioned as an upmarket people mover for family car buyers. Also, the 2.7 liter naturally aspirated petrol engine will be culled from the Innova Crysta’s range, and the MPV will become a diesel-only model. This move from Toyota is meant to clearly differentiate the new Innova HyCross from the Crysta.

There are quite a few differences…

Between the two MPVs. While the Crysta employs a body-on-ladder chassis with a rear wheel drive layout, the HyCross gets a monocoque body with a front wheel drive layout. Although the HyCross is larger than the Crysta, it’s lighter thanks to the monocoque body. There’s no diesel engine on offer, even as an option on the HyCross.

A couple of standout points about the new MPV is that it’s really quick, and that it gets crossover styling that makes it look more like a SUV than a MPV. The HyCross’ Strong Hybrid trims can accelerate to 100 Kph from standstill in under 10 seconds, making it faster than even the Fortuner luxury SUV. With a claimed fuel efficiency of 21.1 Kmpl for the strong hybrid variant, the HyCross is easily the most fuel efficient MPV that Toyota has sold in India. All these factors come together to make the HyCross a significant improved vehicle, and a solid upgrade over the Innova Crysta.

The HyCross will get a long list of firsts, for an Innova…

The panoramic sunroof – A feature that’s never been seen before on an Innova will make an appearance on the HyCross. ADAS – advanced driver assistance system – that consists of lane change alert, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control and traffic sign recognition are some of the key aspects of this safety offered on the HyCross. Other key features on the new crossover from Toyota include  a 10 inch floating type touchscreen infotainment system, a fully redesigned dashboard, a new instrument cluster and 360 degree camera.

From the high front bonnet and commanding driving position to a more muscular profile, the Innova HyCross seems like the perfect bridge between the Innova Crysta, and the much more pricier Fortuner.  Expect prices to start from a little under Rs. 20 lakh. Competition for the HyCross will come chiefly from 7 seat SUVs such as the Mahindra CUV700, the Tata Safari and the Hyundai Alcazar.
