The popularity of electric cars in India is on the rise; however, the limited charging infrastructure remains a constraint. Despite being more expensive than traditional ICE vehicles, electric cars can be cost-effective to run and maintain. A Tata Nexon EV owner in India has found a solution to this problem by using solar power to charge his vehicle, allowing him to operate his car for free. In this article, he explains his approach.

The SOLAR KART YouTube channel has uploaded a video featuring the experience of a Kerala-based doctor who recently bought a Nexon EV. The video highlights that the doctor has installed solar panels at his home, allowing him to power his car with electricity generated from them. As a result, he incurs no running costs for his vehicle.

The video delves into the advantages of investing in both solar panels and electric cars. The doctor explains that he incurs no costs in recharging his Nexon EV, thanks to the solar panels installed at his residence that generate enough electricity to power his house and car. Compared to conventional fuel-driven vehicles, electric cars are significantly less expensive to operate.

The video provides an example to illustrate this point: running a petrol car can cost a minimum of INR 6 lakhs over 8 years, whereas electric cars can cost less than INR 1 lakh over the same period, representing a substantial difference.

Using the EV for free

The doctor also mentions that the surplus electricity generated by his solar panels is sold to the state electricity board. He only needs to charge his car once a week, using approximately 30 units of electricity, which provides an average range of around 250 km. Additionally, electric cars require less frequent servicing than petrol or diesel cars, resulting in further cost savings.

The doctor expresses his satisfaction with his decision to install solar panels and purchase an electric car. Previously, he used a regular electric connection to charge his car, incurring some expenses. However, with solar panels, he is now operating a zero-emission vehicle at no cost, except for a 5% road tax, which is still lower than that of petrol and diesel cars.

The Tata Nexon EV comes in three different variants: XM, XZ Plus, and XZ Plus Lux. All three have a front-wheel-drive configuration with an electric motor mounted at the front that produces 129 PS of maximum power and 245 Nm of maximum torque output. They also feature a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides a claimed driving range of 312 km and takes 8.5 hours for a full charge.

The prices for the Tata Nexon EV range from Rs 14.29 lakh to Rs 16.70 lakh. The top-spec XZ Plus and XZ Plus Lux are available in an optional ‘Black Edition,’ which comes at a premium of around Rs 20,000 over their respective variants.
