Mahindra Thar EV to be revealed soon

If reports are to be believed, Mahindra is set to surprise everyone by unveiling an all-electric concept of its popular lifestyle off-roader, the Thar. The new Mahindra Thar Electric concept will be showcased at the company’s upcoming public event on August 15th in South Africa. This marks the second concept vehicle from Mahindra, following the double-cab pickup concept based on the popular Scorpio-N SUV.

Contrary to speculation, Mahindra has confirmed that the five-door Thar will not be revealed on August 15th. Instead, the focus will be on the electric concept of the Thar, possibly featuring a standard four-wheel drive setup. It is expected that the basic ladder-on-frame chassis and the three-door layout of the Mahindra Thar will be retained for this new electric concept.

In terms of the electric powertrain, the Mahindra Thar Electric concept might adopt a quad motor setup, with one motor on each wheel, enabling features like crab-walk ability, similar to the Hummer EV. While specific details about the powertrain have not been disclosed, Mahindra showcased five different born-electric concepts last year, none of which featured a ladder-on-frame construction.

The ruggedness of the Mahindra Thar is attributed to its strong ladder-on-frame chassis, which is heavier than a monocoque frame found in similarly-sized compact SUVs. In the past, battery packaging and placement were considered an issue for ladder-on-frame SUVs, but this has been disproven by ladder-on-frame four-wheel drive EVs like the Ford F-150 Lightning.

Only XUV 400 EV in the portfolio

As for the powertrain, it remains unclear what setup Mahindra will showcase for the Thar Electric concept. Currently, Mahindra’s only electric vehicle is the XUV400, equipped with a single motor setup generating 147.5 bhp of power and 310 Nm of torque. The top-end version comes with a 39.4 kWh battery pack, providing a claimed maximum driving range of 456 km.

While the Mahindra Thar Electric concept is still far from production, Mahindra is known for thoroughly testing its vehicles before they hit the showroom floors. The production timeline for the Thar Electric has not been disclosed yet, but more details are expected to be revealed during the concept’s unveiling on August 15th.

Scorpio-N Pick-up to be unveiled as well

The visual teaser of the Global Pik Up Vision has been released by Mahindra on its social media handles, indicating that it will be a concept pickup vehicle based on the Mahindra Scorpio-N.

The Mahindra Global Pik Up Vision, codenamed Z121, shares its platform with the Scorpio-N. This upcoming vehicle will be distinct from the Scorpio Getaway, much like the difference between the Scorpio-N and the Scorpio Classic. Notably, the present version of the Mahindra Scorpio Getaway, known as the Mahindra Pik Up in Australia, boasts a longer wheelbase compared to the Scorpio Classic.
