Honda’s first electric car will be based on Elevate SUV

Honda Elevate has gained quite a popularity in the Indian market and has pushed the sales of the Japanese brand. The brand, which already offers a hybrid option with the City sedan, is now retooling its Tapukara plant, preparing it for the production of the electric vehicles.

The information confirmed by ACI says that the first electric vehicle from the Japanese giant will be based on the Honda Elevate SUV. It will be produced at the brand’s Tapukara plant, which is now the only production facility in India. The first-ever EV from the Honda will go on sale in the Indian market in 2025.

Even though the new Elevate is not based on a born-electric platform, it will help the brand to mark its entry in the new segment, which is quickly becoming popular and is already dominated by Tata Motors. The electric vehicle based on Elevate is yet to get a name, but it will enter the Indian market at a time when the EV market will be matured enough.

Currently, the Nexon EC, MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona EV are the only two mass-segment electric SUVs available in the Indian market. Of these three SUVs, the the electric car based on the Elevate will take on the ZS EV and the Kona EV. It is likely that we will get to see more offerings in the same segment by the time Honda decides to bring in its new electric car including the Tata Harrier EV.

There is no information on the range of the upcoming electric car, but it is likely to be around 500 km as per official figures.

No info on Elevate hybrid

Even though the Elevate is based on the City platform, the brand is currently offering the SUV only with a single powertrain option. There is no petrol-hybrid option like the Honda City available with the Elevate. However, the car has been selling close to 10,000 units with the single engine option.

Under the hood, the Honda Elevate comes with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine, paired exclusively with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT gearbox. This well-tuned gasoline engine delivers an impressive 119bhp and 145Nm of peak torque. As for fuel efficiency, the ARAI-certified mileage stands at 15.31kmpl with the manual transmission and 16.92kmpl with the automatic option.
