Land Rover Defender tows truck carrying a crane: Brute torque on display [Video]

We have seen multiple videos of SUVs saving the day by towing much heavier vehicles out of problems. This one though is a mega tow done by Land Rover Defender 110 on an uphill. The Defender here towed an Eicher truck, a crane parked on it and a piece of machinery.

The video is from an unknown location. You can see the Land Rover Defender pulling the truck and the crane parked on it. It looks like the vehicles are going uphill.

The new Defender 110 has a towing capacity of around 3,700 kg. The truck and the crane both weigh thousands of kilos! The truck alone would be around 15,000 kg while the crane is an additional 25,000 to 30,000 kg. Nonetheless, this is way beyond the capacity of the Defender 110.

Since the sound of the original clip is unavailable, we are not sure if the trucker was struggling to climb uphill with the crane. If this is the case then the trucker must have had the engine turned on and the Defender provided an additional assist for the truck.

Another possibility is that the truck broke down and the Defender was helping to tow it to a nearby mechanic or the safety of the roadside. In this case, the engine of the truck would have been shut down.

Regardless, the Defender did a great job and was used as it was intended to. The Land Rover Defender has made a highly successful comeback in India after decades of absence, quickly becoming a favourite among Indian and foreign drivers alike for extreme off-roading adventures. Earlier this year, the British luxury car manufacturer added new engine options to the model, and the Land Rover Defender 110 now offers five doors and a 5+2 seating option.

Impressively, the Land Rover Defender boasts exceptional capabilities, including a ground clearance of 291mm, a 38-degree approach angle, and a 40-degree departure angle. It can also navigate through water depths of up to 900mm, which is remarkable. In addition, it offers a roof load capacity of 300kg and can tow a massive 3,500kg.

Despite its rugged off-road performance, the Land Rover Defender’s cabin maintains a premium feel, featuring a 10-inch centre touchscreen and the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system from Land Rover.

Tata Hexa towed an aeroplane

A few years ago, the Tata Hexa showcased its impressive towing capabilities by pulling an aeroplane. The Hexa is equipped with a powerful 2.2-litre VARICOR diesel engine. This four-cylinder engine generates a maximum power of 154 BHP at 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm at a low range of 1,700 to 2,700 rpm. The vehicle’s abundance of low-end torque allows it to perform remarkable feats, as demonstrated in the video.

The video shows the Hexa effortlessly towing a Boeing 737 300 aircraft, which is a commonly used commercial aircraft by private airlines worldwide. The aircraft itself has an empty weight of around 33,000 kg, making it quite substantial. In the video, the Hexa steadily pulls the heavy airliner over a considerable distance, maintaining a good pace.

In a separate event, a standard Land Rover Discovery Sport created quite a spectacle when it captured the attention of onlookers. It successfully towed three luxury train carriages, each weighing over 100 tonnes, along a railway track. This impressive feat took place during a 10km journey through the Rhine region of northern Switzerland. The compact Discovery Sport, certified with a maximum towing weight of 2,500kg (2.5 tonnes), was able to pull a load that was 60 times its own weight. This incredible achievement was made possible by Jaguar Land Rover’s 180PS Ingenium diesel engine, providing 430Nm of torque.
