Maruti Jimny 4X4 Vs Grand Vitara AWD: Difference Between Four Wheel Drive And All Wheel Drive On Video

When it comes to off-roading and handling capabilities of cars, there are two types of systems that are focused upon. The first is a dedicated 4-wheel drive system, and the other is an AWD system. Now, although both of these systems offer power to all four wheels, there are various differences between them. In India, Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, offers both of these systems in two of its popular vehicles. It offers the Jimny with the 4X4 and the Grand Vitara with the AWD system. Recently, a video highlighting the differences between these two models has been shared online.

The video of Maruti Suzuki Jimny with 4X4 vs Grand Vitara with AWD system has been shared on YouTube by Gagan Choudhary on their channel. The presenter starts the video by mentioning that in this comprehensive video, he will explain the major difference between a 4X4 system and an AWD system. For this, he first starts showing the capabilities of the Jimny and Grand Vitara on a frozen lake with ice.

Following this, he then starts with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and mentions that he will be engaging the 4X4 low range and will keep the car in second gear to have power but less torque. Next, he first reverses the Jimny on the ice and states that it is very slippery and the car is struggling to find grip despite having traction control and other electronics. After this, he then starts driving the car towards the cameraman and highlights that the Jimny is facing a lot of issues in making traction to climb up the icy slope.

Next up, he then takes a seat in the Grand Vitara and mentions that it comes with an AWD system. He adds that it offers the capability to select and lock the mode and also states that the snow mode in the Grand Vitara can also be used for icy conditions as well. Following this, he then shows how effortlessly the Grand Vitara can drive on the icy slope. The presenter then explains that this is possible because the Grand Vitara gets a lot more electronics which helps it in achieving more grip on ice.

4X4 vs AWD on rough terrains

After the first test and before commencing the second test, the presenter provides a brief of the systems offered by Maruti Suzuki. He states that the company offers three types of systems – All Grip Pro which is offered in Jimny, All Grip Select which is offered in Grand Vitara, and All Grip Auto which is not offered in any car in India. Next up, he then starts with the second test in which he drives both cars on rough mountain terrains.

He then starts highlighting the differences between the 4X4 equipped Jimny and Grand Vitara with AWD. The presenter states that the Jimny with its low range gearing, ladder-on-frame chassis, locking differential, and better articulation because of solid axles can easily glide over any obstacle. Meanwhile, the Grand Vitara finds it a little difficult to cross such terrains because of its monocoque chassis, poor approach and departure angles, and lack of solid axles.

To explain briefly, a 4X4 system, also known as four-wheel drive, typically refers to a system where power is sent to all four wheels simultaneously, providing enhanced traction and better off-road capability. This system is often manually engaged. On the other hand, an AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system automatically distributes power between the front and rear wheels, and sometimes between individual wheels, based on traction needs. AWD is generally designed for on-road use and provides improved stability and traction in various road conditions, such as rain or light snow, without requiring driver intervention.
