Prime Minister Narendra Modi Convoy’s 3 Armoured Diesel Vehicles Hit By NGT Ban

As we all are aware, diesel engine vehicles older than 10 years are not allowed in Delhi, and because of this, a number of people have faced inconvenience. However, you’d be shocked to hear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also become a subject of this ruling.

It has been reported that the NGT (National Green Tribunal) has dismissed the request of SPG (Special Protection Group) to extend the registration of three armored vehicles. These vehicles are part of PM Modi’s security convoy.

It has been reported that SPG had requested a five-year extension for the registration of three specialized vehicles. The organization emphasized that these armored vehicles play a critical role in the Prime Minister’s security.

SPG stated that these Renault MD-5 (also called Sherpa) models were manufactured in 2013. However, they were registered in December 2014. The NGT, while dismissing the plea of SPG, noted that the vehicles have relatively recent registration.

Additionally, it also noted that these vehicles have been driven sparingly as well. As per the reports, these vehicles have covered distances of only 6,000 km, 9,500 km, and 15,000 km over the past nine years.

However, despite acknowledging the unique nature of these armored vehicles, and keeping in mind the limited use over the past decade, the NGT could not permit the extension of registration beyond the mandated timeline. For this decision, NGT cited the ruling of the Supreme Court from 2018.

Originally registered for 15 years, the validity of these vehicles’ registration was set to expire in December 2029. However, the Supreme Court’s ruling from 2018 mandated the cancellation of diesel vehicles older than 10 years by December 2024.

NGT’s official statement

According to NGT, in its official order it stated, “We are conscious of the fact that these three vehicles are special purpose vehicles which are not normally available and these vehicles have run very less in the last ten years and are needed for the specific purpose of security of the Prime Minister but in view of the order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court dated 29.10.2018… the prayer made… cannot be granted,” and it “is accordingly rejected.”

The Renault MD-5 armored vehicle is also called the Renault Sherpa. This special vehicle was showcased at the Defence Expo back in 2012. It was first acquired by the National Security Group (NSG) to be used as an APC or Armoured Personnel Vehicle.

This special armoured vehicle, which is a crucial part of PM Modi’s security convoy, uses a massive 4.76-litre turbocharged diesel engine. This motor generates 215 bhp and 800 Nm of peak torque.

The Sherpa offers a 1,000 km range. It also comes with a water wading capacity of 1.1 meters, and it can be increased up to 1.5 meters if needed. This unique vehicle also gets a central tyre inflation and deflation system and run-flat tyres along with ABS as standard.
