Luxury vehicles have always been an attraction for car thieves worldwide. In a surprising occurrence, a Bentley Mulsanne saloon, which was stolen from the United Kingdom, was found in a lavish bungalow in Karachi, Pakistan. Although customs officials recovered the vehicle in Pakistan, the question remains: how did it make its way to an entirely different continent? Below are the details.
The Pakistani officials reported the stolen car to the UK National Crime Agency. Upon receiving a tip-off from the agency, the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement (CCE) in Karachi conducted a raid to recover the Bentley. The parked Bentley Mulsanne sedan was located by the UK National Crime Agency outside a residence in the DHA area of the city, which is a posh residential neighborhood. Local media reports from Pakistan indicate that the thieves did not remove the tracking device from the Bentley, and the tracker was not switched off. This allowed the UK authorities to locate the vehicle and pinpoint its exact location. The UK authorities continued tracking the vehicle and shared the information with the Pakistani government.

Upon conducting the raid, Pakistani officials came across a Bentley with a Pakistani registration and number plate. However, upon further inspection, they discovered that the chassis number of the Bentley matched the one that was reported stolen from the UK. As the owner was unable to provide supporting documents, the Pakistani authorities seized the vehicle. The car owner was arrested by Pakistani authorities, along with the broker who sold the vehicle to him. According to officials, the registration of the vehicle was forged.
During the raid, a racket was uncovered that smuggled cars from Eastern Europe, using documents belonging to a top diplomat from one of the countries in that region. According to officials who filed the FIR, the smuggling of the stolen vehicle resulted in the evasion of taxes amounting to over 300 million Pakistani Rupees. Numerous rackets of a similar nature operate across international borders. In India, most stolen cars are dismantled into pieces, and their spare parts are sold separately to prevent the thieves from being traced. Many cars stolen in India also end up in neighboring countries such as Nepal and Bangladesh.
Importance of GPS trackers
Although many modern-day cars come equipped with factory-fitted tracking devices, it is recommended to install a hardwired tracker that remains hidden under the dashboard. Several such devices are available in the market that can be wired into a car’s ECU. These devices notify users about engine starts, car speeds, and if the car goes beyond a certain pre-fixed point. Furthermore, these devices can remotely switch off the ignition of the vehicle. Above all, it can also track the location of the car.
Certain devices are capable of remotely disabling the engine as well. Owners can also set up a GPS fence that automatically turns off the engine if the vehicle crosses a specific point. These devices are available for all types of vehicles, and owners must pay a nominal subscription fee to keep the GPS system and Internet activity in the device active.
